The University of Minnesota volleyball team was recently honored by the NCAA as it held high academic success last season.
On May 7, it was announced that volleyball was one of 12 University of Minnesota sports who scored in the top 10 percent of their respective sport based on their most recent multi-year APR. The twelve teams more than doubles the five Minnesota teams recognized last year and is another indicator of Gopher Athletics academic commitment.
On May 14, the NCAA announced that Gopher volleyball held a perfect 1,000 multi-year rate and a 2012-13 perfect score. Gopher Volleyball was one of nine Minnesota sports to a perfect multi-year score. In the Big Ten, only five programs held that standard (Michigan, Northwestern, Purdue and Ohio State).
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance. The most recent APR scores are based on a multi-year rate that averages scores from the 2009-10, 2010-11, 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years.
In fact, the University of Minnesota ranked fourth among FBS institutions with the highest percentage of teams earning APR Awards. The Golden Gophers, who held 48 percent, ranked behind only Northwestern (63), Notre Dame (58) and Duke (54).
