1. Minesota welcomes San Jose State to TCF Bank Stadium for the second straight year. The Gophers topped the Spartans 43-23 on Sept. 21, 2013. Quarterback Mitch Leidner made his first career start against the Spartans and turned in a memorable performance. Leidner rushed for 151 yards (seventh most in school history for a quarterback) and tied a school record for quarterbacks when he rushed for four touchdowns. David Cobb added a pair of touchdowns and the Gopher defense limited the high-powered Spartan offense to 23 points (8.3 points below their average) in the win.
2. Coach Kill has coached 123 home games in his career and he has an overall record of 88-35 in those games. That mark includes a 14-9 record at Minnesota. Kill was 20-6 in home games at Saginaw Valley State (included a nine-game winning streak) and was 6-5 in home games Emporia State. He was 34-11 at Southern Illinois (started 5-7 and then finished 29-3), which included 12 and 10-game winning streaks. Kill was 14-4 in home games at Northern Illinois before coming to Minnesota.
3. Minnesota plays it final non-conference game of the season on Saturday against San Jose State. The Gophers had won their 10 previous regular-season, non-conference games before falling at TCU, 30-7, last Saturday. Minnesota's 10-game streak was tied for the sixth-longest streak in the nation with Oregon and Louisville. The Gophers will look to start a new streak on Saturday against the Spartans. After San Jose State, Minnesota's next regular-season non-conference game is Sept. 3, 2015, when the Gophers host TCU to begin the season.
4. The Gophers have five interceptions (by four different players) this year through three games and now have 28 interceptions in their last 29 games. In Minnesota's prior 29 games, it recorded 21 interceptions. Through three games, Minnesota leads the Big Ten in interceptions (Ohio State and Penn State both also have five). Briean Boddy-Calhoun has two interceptions for Minnesota and now has three interceptions in his last five games played (had an pick-six against UNLV to open the 2014 season and then suffered a season-ending injury in the second game of the year at New Mexico State). Antonio Johnson, Jalen Myrick and Damien Wilson also have interceptions for Minnesota this year, with Myrick's being returned for a touchdown.
5. The Gophers are once again one of the least penalized teams in the Big Ten. Minnesota has been flagged 12 times in three games, which ties it with Michigan for the fewest penalties by a team that has played three games (Michigan State and Wisconsin have been penalized seven times, but have played two games). Both Minnesota and Michigan have been penalized 12 times for 114 yards (38.0 yards per game). On the flip side, Gopher opponents have been called for 23 penalties for 180 yards (60.0 yards per game).
