Four days after finishing up at the Windon Memorial Classic, the Golden Gophers will begin play at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate. The tournament in Albuquerque, N.M., runs Friday, Sept. 26-Saturday, Sept. 27. Tee times will start at 8 a.m. in shotgun fashion both days, with 36 holes on Friday and 18 on Saturday.
Minnesota started the fall with a fourth-place showing at its own Gopher Invitational, followed by a 13th-place finish at the Windon Memorial. The Gophers will look to get back on track in Albuquerque.
This will mark the third consecutive year in which the Gophers have played at the Tucker. They finished eighth in 2013 (Jose Mendez tied for 14th and Tyler Lowenstein for 35th), and tied for fourth in 2012.
The travel squad: Mendez, Lowenstein, Jon DuToit, Daniel Luftspring and Rúnar Arnorsson will compete this weekend. Mendez, Lowenstein, Luftspring and Arnorsson all played at the Windon Memorial, which concluded Monday.
The field: Arizona, Brigham Young, Colorado, Colorado State, Louisiana-Lafayette, New Mexico State, San Diego State, TCU, Texas Tech, UNLV, UT-Arlington, UTEP and Wyoming will join Minnesota and host New Mexico. The Gophers have faced New Mexico this fall, as they finished one place ahead of the Lobos at the Gopher Invitational.
The course: The UNM Championship Course will have a par-72, 7,562-yard layout.
Notes: *In Golfweek's first collegiate poll, Minnesota is ranked 59th. Mendez is ranked 34th individually.
*Mendez has finished in the top 10 of seven consecutive tournaments. He has nine top-10 finishes in all.
*Seven different Gophers have counted toward the team score in Minnesota's first two fall tournaments. Mendez, Lowenstein and Matt Rachey have played for the team in both events, while Luftspring and Arnorsson made their team debuts in Skokie. Grady Meyer and DuToit played attached in the Gopher Invitational.
