The Gophers are back on the mainland!

After two weeks of rigorous training we have completed our training trip for 2015 and are looking forward to the upcoming months. The past week was a blast; our last Saturday on Oahu included a men's team hike up Diamond Head while the women relaxed by the waves at Sandy Beach. The swimmers and coaches met up for another delicious team dinner at the Marriott hotel right on Waikiki beach, provided by the generous alumna Dorothy L. Sheppard.

On Sunday, our day off, many Gophers woke up at 5:30 to hike up Koko Head Crater in time to see the sun rise from 1200 feet. In the afternoon, many of us took a catamaran boat ride out to Turtle Canyons near Waikiki beach so we could jump in the ocean and snorkel around. The area was full of large sea turtles and other tropical fish including the Hawaiian state fish, "Humuhumunukunukuapua`a". We were quite excited to see wildlife swimming underneath us instead of the black line we are used to staring at!

Our last practice of training trip ended with the traditional "Goal 50s" set. All groups gathered at Punahou School yesterday morning at 6 to complete the 30x50s fast together. It was a challenging practice but many of my teammates put up some great performances during the set. The seniors were happy to complete Goal 50s for (hopefully) the last time but we were bittersweet when we realized our fourth and final year on the island had come to a close.

Thank you so much to our coaches and Emily, Shelley, and Abbey for allowing us to have such a great training trip!
