MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota (16-4, 5-3) women's basketball team is set to host Penn State (5-15, 2-7) in a 7 p.m. Big Ten contest Wednesday night at Williams Arena. The game will be streamed live on BTN Plus, while the Golden Gopher radio team of Corbu Stathes and Lynnette Sjoquist can be heard live on KBEM Jazz 88.5 FM. Live stats will be available on Gophersports.com, while live updates can be found on Minnesota's official Twitter page - @GophersWBB.
Wednesday's contest against the Lady Lions will serve as Rachel Banham Lakeville Community Night, with the senior set to sign autographs following the game.
With a 5-3 Big Ten record, the Gophers currently sit in a five-way tie for third place in league standings with No. 15/19 Nebraska, No. 22/23 Rutgers, Michigan and Ohio State and are coming off back-to-back losses against Purdue and Rutgers for the first time this season.
For its recent succes, Minnesota was honored by espnW as its Midseason Biggest Surprise for its play since the loss of Preseason Big Ten Player of the Year Rachel Banham, while sophomore Amanda Zahui B. was named to the site's Midseason All-America Team. The center was also named to the Big Ten Weekly Honor Roll after averaging 31 points, 13 rebounds and two blocks in the team's pair of games against the Boilermakers and the Scarlet Knights. It was her third time being selected to the honor roll and her fifth time earning Big Ten weekly recognition this season.
The Gophers are 12-27 all-time and 9-9 in Minneapolis when facing Penn State, with their last win against the Lady Lions coming on Feb. 28, 2013, when they knocked off then No. 7/7 ranked Penn State at Williams Arena. Four players scored in double figures to pace the Maroon and Gold to the victory, including including Micaella Riche (24), Rachel Banham (23), Sari Noga (19) and Shayne Mullaney (10).
The Lady Lions make the trip to Minneapolis having won two-straight Big Ten contests against Indiana and Northwestern. Including the pair of wins, Penn State is 5-15 overall on the season and is tied for 13th in the Big Ten with a 2-7 league record. The Lady Lions have not won on the road in 2014-15, holding an 0-7 record in true road contests and each of the team's five wins have come when they are leading at halftime.
Three players are averaging double-figure scoring for the Lady Lions, paced by 14.7 points from Lindsey Spann. Sierra Moore follows with 12.1 points per game and Candice Agee rounds out the trio with 10.5 points per game, while Kaliyah Mitchell leads Penn State with 7.1 rebounds per game.
