Oct. 2, 2015 Box Score
MADISON, Wis. - The No. 11 University of Minnesota women's soccer team fell on the road to the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday night, 0-1.
The Maroon and Gold are now 9-2-2 overall and 4-0-1 in Big Ten play.
"Credit Wisconsin who played extremely hard and as well as I've seen them play this year," said head coach Stefanie Golan. "They were ready for us and we never found our rhythm and struggled to get dangerous today. We are disappointed in the result, especially to lose on a penalty kick, but it is only our second loss on the year and first blip in the Big Ten."
The lone score of the night came off a converted penalty kick in the 35th-minute of the game, as the Badgers capitalized off a Minnesota foul in the box. The goal was Kinley McNicoll's second goal of the season.
In the very physical first half, Minnesota tallied two shots, earned three corner kicks and had six fouls.
The Badgers notched four shots, earned one corner kick and tallied eight fouls.
Coming out after half, both teams displayed the same level of intensity and fought vigorously on both sides of the ball. Neither would concede, leaving the final result 1-0, Wisconsin.
"Wisconsin was able to throw us off our game and came out really tough against us," said junior co-captain Simone Kolander. "I expected there would be some adversity and here it is. We are still in a really good place though and we will rebound from this."
On the night, Minnesota had four shots to the Badgers' nine, both teams had four corner kick opportunities and the Gophers tallied seven fouls to Wisconsin's 13.
Junior Josee Stiever, freshman April Bockin, sophomore Sydney Squires and Kolander all contributed to the Gophers' shots on the night.
With the loss, junior goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs's record moves to 8-2-2 in goal.
"This is one minor setback and we have so much more going for us," said senior co-captain Haley Helverson. "Going forward, we just have to regroup defensively and build on our offense. We create dangerous opportunities often and we were missing that final finishing piece tonight."
"We are going to put it behind us and move on to Nebraska and get back to what we do well - press, possess and combination play in the final third," said Golan. "We've got an excellent team who is determined to have a great season and we will be ready to battle next weekend."
LOOKING AHEAD
Next week, Minnesota continues Big Ten play as they take Nebraska for a 7:05 p.m. match against the Cornhuskers on Thurs. Oct. 8, followed by a trip to Iowa City on Sun. Oct. 11 for a noon match-up with the Hawkeyes.
