The University of Minnesota announced today that its student-athletes posted a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 88 percent, continuing the long-term trend of GSR increases in Gopher Athletics.

The NCAA Graduation Success Rate is designed to show the proportion of student-athletes on any given team who earn a college degree. The report represents data from first-time freshmen, student-athletes who entered at midyear, and student-athletes who transferred into the University of Minnesota between 2005 and 2008. It excludes student-athletes who transfer from the university in good academic standing.

Since the NCAA began releasing Graduation Success Rate figures in 2005, Gopher Athletics has improved its GSR by 21 points. The 88 percent represents a two-point percentage increase and continued GSR improvement for Minnesota.

"The single greatest obligation we have to our student-athletes and their families is to ensure they receive the world-class education the University of Minnesota offers all of its students and leave here with their degree," said Interim Director of Athletics Beth Goetz. "Today's release of the NCAA graduation success rate reflects that commitment. It's wonderful to see positive results coming from the work of young men and women focused on excelling in the classroom and dedicated staff who support every student-athlete to help them get the most out of their education and prepare them for success throughout the rest of their lives."

"Graduation rates are a top priority for the University of Minnesota and improving the rate at which our student-athletes graduate is our primary goal for the McNamara Academic Center staff, coaches and athletic administration," Director of the McNamara Academic Center J.T. Bruett said. "Our current NCAA graduation success rate is an indicator of what I see every day; student-athletes striving for and committed to excellence in the classroom."

The NCAA also released Federal Graduation Rates in the report, which categorizes student-athletes who transfer from or leave an institution for any reason as non-graduates from their initial school, even if they leave in good academic standing and subsequently graduate from another institution. There was good news in these numbers as well for Minnesota student-athletes, whose score was 72 percent.

Graduation Success Rates for Minnesota's women's programs continue to increase, with all 11 programs posting GSR figures of 80 percent or higher. Nine programs scored better than 90 percent, with basketball, gymnastics, soccer, tennis and volleyball all posting perfect scores of 100 percent.

On the men's side, eight programs posted GSR rates of 80 percent or higher, with gymnastics (100), tennis (100), wrestling (96), swimming (90), basketball (90) and track & field/cross country (90) among the highest performing teams.
