Six Gophers Tabbed Academic All-District

Six Gopher student-athletes from the football and volleyball teams were recognized as CoSIDA Academic All-District honorees, it was announced on Thursday. Paige Tapp, Hannah Tapp and Katie Schau were the three representatives from the volleyball program, while Briean Boddy-Calhoun, Jon Christenson and Brandon Lingen were tabbed from the football team.
The three volleyball choices were the most by any Big Ten Conference institution. Football's three selections tied Purdue for the league lead.
Paige Tapp, a 6-foot, 1-inch middle blocker is a marketing major through the Carlson School of Management. Holding a 3.87 grade point average, garners her second-straight Academic All-District award. Named to the 2015 Preseason All-Big Ten list, Tapp ranks fourth in the conference in blocks per set (1.28) and second on the Gophers in total kills (202) and hitting efficiency (.323). Seeing action in all 81 possible sets this year, Tapp averages 2.49 kills per set and posted 268.5 points for the Gophers this season. On the year, Tapp was named the Big Ten Defensive Player of the Week after she had 17 blocks against Ohio State and Penn State. Tapp was also named to the Academic All-Big Ten team last year.
Hannah Tapp, a 6-foot, 2-inch middle blocker is a marketing major through the Carlson School of Management. Holding a 3.58 GPA, Tapp was named a second-team all-district as a sophomore. In her junior campaign this season, Tapp has played in 78 of a possible 81 sets and ranks third on the team in kills (196) and blocks per set (0.99). Playing both the right side and middle position for the Gophers, Tapp has also accumulated 77 blocks this season. She was named the AVCA National Player of the Week as well as the Co-Big Ten Player of the Week after hitting .400 in the Nebraska win. Tapp was also named to the Academic All-Big Ten team last year.
Katie Schau, a 5-foot, 8-inch setter/defensive specialist is a chemical engineering major and holds a 3.59 GPA. This marks the first Academic All-District award for the junior, after she was named an Academic All-Big Ten selection her sophomore year. Playing in all 81 sets this season, Schau has accumulated 181 digs this season, which ranks third on the team. She has also accumulated 37 assists, 11 aces and two block assists her junior year.
Briean Boddy-Calhoun is a redshirt senior defensive back from Wilmington, Del. who is currently on course to receive a master's in Human Resource Development. Holding a 3.34 GPA, Boddy-Calhoun receives his first recognition as Academic All-District. He was named Academic All-Big Ten a season ago. Through 34 career games played for the Gophers, Boddy-Calhoun has amassed 89 total tackles, 19 passes defended and eight interceptions, which is tied for 11th on the program's all-time list.
Jon Christenson, a redshirt senior offensive lineman, has already received a bachelor's degree and is working towards a master's in Public Health Administration and Policy. Christenson hails from Minnetonka, Minn. and has been named Academic All-Big Ten every season since stepping foot on campus, including being tabbed as a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar in 2013 and 2014. Christenson has blocked for two of the top-8 rushing seasons all-time in program history.
Brandon Lingen is a sophomore tight end from Wayzata, Minn. He holds a 3.85 GPA as a Pre-Engineering major. Lingen has recorded 15 catches for 220 yards and has two touchdowns, which ranks second on the team. After a stellar performance against Michigan last week, Lingen was named the John Mackey Award Tight End of the Week.
