University of Minnesota's Paige Tapp (Stewartville, Minn.) has been named a Second Team Academic All-American, announced today by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The award marks the first Academic All-America honor for Tapp and the University's first since Cassie Busse in 2003.
A marketing major through Minnesota's Carlson School of Management, Tapp holds a 3.87 cumulative grade point average as a junior. A First Team All-District last season, Tapp garnered her second All-America honor as a Golden Gopher after receiving third team laurels from the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) as a sophomore last year.
On the court, Tapp was named an All-North Region AVCAĆ¢ā¬Ėselection and an All-Big Ten honorable mention this season. In the opening weekend of NCAA competition, Tapp hit .591 when she had 14 kills, committed just one error in 22 attempts. Her hitting percentage ranked second among NCAA tournament competitors. On the year, Tapp ranks third on the team with 275 kills, and has posted a .328 hitting efficiency. She ranks second on the team in blocks per set at .1.19 and ninth among Big Ten student-athletes. Earning one Big Ten weekly accolade, Tapp was named a Preseason All-Big Ten selection.
Tapp is one of three individuals that hail from the Big Ten Conference, as she is joined by HaleighĆ¢ā¬ĖWashington (Penn State) and Ashley Evans (Purdue). To be considered for the award, student-athletes must hold a 3.30 GPAĆ¢ā¬Ėor higher and see significant playing time for their respective team.
Minnesota plays tomorrow in the NCAAĆ¢ā¬ĖRegional Semifinals in Des Moines, Iowa. The Golden Gophers take on Illinois at 5 p.m. at the Wells Fargo Arena.
