Dec. 21, 2015
Former Golden Gophers football captain Wayne Robinson passed away Dec. 21, 2015 in the company of his family. As the starting center, Robinson was a distinguished leader of both the offensive line and the team as a whole. He captained the 1951 squad under the direction of head coach Wes Fesler.
Robinson was given the 1950 Bronko Nagurski Award, which annually names the team’s most valuable player. He was only the second center in program history to be named as the team’s top player.
After his career with the Gophers, Robinson was chosen in the eighth round of the NFL Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. The Minneapolis, Minn. native switched the other side of the ball and was a linebacker for Philadelphia’s stout defense. Robinson was tabbed to two Pro Bowls (1954 and 1955) and was a back-to-back All-Pro selection after the 1955 and 1956 seasons.
Robinson is survived by his three children, five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
