EVANSTON, Ill. - The University of Minnesota (17-5, 6-4) women's basketball team fell on the road at Northwestern (15-6, 5-5), 70-49, Sunday afternoon at Welsh-Ryan Arena despite getting a double-double with 13 points, 15 rebounds and four blocks from Amanda Zahui B. and 14 points from Carlie Wagner.
Zahui's double-double was her 16th of the season and 34th of her career, while Wagner scored in double figures for the fifth-straight game and 12th time in her last 13 outings. She connected on a career-high four three-point field goals in the contest.
Six of the Gophers' eight total three-pointers came in the first half, with Minnesota shooting .500 from beyond the arch in the first 20 minutes of play. But, the Maroon and Gold struggled to get into a rhythm offensively, as they were just 9-of-35 inside the three-point line and 17-of-58 overall from the field.
Zahui's layup at 16:51 early in the game put Minnesota ahead by one point, and the Gophers would hold onto their lead for the next six minutes, going up by as many as five points during the stretch. The Wildcats evened the game, 17-17, but a three-pointer from Wagner pushed Minnesota's lead back to three points. The Maroon and Gold's shooting would go cold after the shot, however, as they went scoreless for the next 6:49, allowing Northwestern to build a nine-point advantage that would eventually stretch to 10 points at halftime, 37-27.
The Gophers would fall down by as many as 22 points in the second half, which was a deficit that they weren't able to overcome.
Minnesota returns to Illinois Thursday night for an 8 p.m. meeting with the Fighting Illini on BTN.
