MINNEAPOLIS -Three Gophers scored 20 or more points for just the fifth time in program history as the University of Minnesota (22-6, 11-5) women's basketball team topped Michigan (15-12, 7-9), 91-88, in double overtime Saturday afternoon to pick up its 22nd win of the season at Williams Arena for Senior Day.
The 22 regular-season wins for the Maroon and Gold ties for the second-most in program history, while the mark hasn't been accomplished in 10 years, as it last posted 22 regular-season wins in 2004-05.
Amanda Zahui B. continued her record-setting week with 27 points, 27 rebounds and five blocks for her 20th double-double of the year. With her third block of the game, Zahui surpassed her own program single-season record of 105 blocks and concluded the contest with 109 for the season.
In two wins this week over No. 13/11 Iowa and Michigan, Zahui totaled 66 points, 56 rebounds and nine blocks to extend the Gophers' Big Ten winning streak to five games for the first time in nine years.
Along with Zahui, senior Shae Kelley, who was honored with fellow senior Kayla Hirt for Senior Day, added her 11th double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds, while freshman Carlie Wagner tallied 21 points and six assists for the home team. Shayne Mullaney was one assist short of her second-career double-double, as she had 11 points and nine assists and Mikayla Bailey notched nine points and five rebounds in the win.
The Gophers posted a .459 (34-74) overall field goal percentage, which included a .435 (10-23) mark from three-point range. After connecting on just three of its 11 attempts from beyond the arch in the first half, the Maroon and Gold drained six of its 10 attempts in the second half and one of two in overtime.
Minnesota had a hard time getting into a rhythm in the first half, as it headed into the break trailing the Wolverines, 39-33. The Gophers turned the ball over 12 times, while shooting just .273 from three-point range.
Minnesota found its flow in the second half, using a 12-2 run to open the stanza and reclaim its lead, 45-41, with 15:09 to play. A steal from Zahui and a three-point play from Kelley got the run started and a three-pointer from Bailey got the Williams Arena crowd on its feet to cap the stretch for the Maroon and Gold.
The Gophers would extend their advantage to eight points, 52-44, on a three-point play from Wagner, with the rookie scored six points in under one minute to keep the Maroon and Gold rolling. After going ahead by as many as 11 points midway through the second half, Minnesota allowed Michigan to cut its lead to one point, 63-62, with just 3:30 remaining on the clock.
The Wolverines took the lead with 1:41 to play, before Mullaney drained her second three-pointer of the contest to put the home team on top by two with 1:15 remaining. A Katelyn Flaherty three-pointer with 46 seconds to play gave Michigan the lead once again, but Wagner knocked down a response with 19 seconds remaining to put the advantage back in Minnesota's favor, 69-67. It took three tries, but Michigan's Nicole Elmblad sent the game into overtime with a rebound and jumper as time expired.
Minnesota took a four-point lead, 78-74, on the Wolverines with 1:40 to play in overtime and again at 53 seconds on a pair of free throws from Mullaney, but a 4-0 run from the visitors to close out the stanza sent the contest into double overtime for just the first time this season for the Maroon and Gold.
The Gophers finally broke through in the second OT as six points from Zahui helped the squad take a six-point advantage at the one-minute mark. Elmblad helped Michigan cut the Maroon and Gold lead to two points with 18 seconds to play, but Mullaney knocked down a free throw and picked up her first block of the season on the Wolverines' three-point attempt to seal the win for Minnesota.
The Maroon and Gold concludes regular-season play with road games at No. 21/20 Nebraska Tuesday at 8 p.m. and at No. 13/11 Iowa Sunday at 2 p.m. Both games will be broadcast live on BTN.
