ORLANDO, Fla. - The Minnesota women's golf team returned from its winter break and opened the spring season at the UCF Challenge on Sunday, firing a three-over-par 291 to tie for eighth place after the opening round. The Gophers are tied with Texas and trailing tournament leader Vanderbilt (-11) by 14 strokes after 18 holes at the 6,349-yard, par 72 Eagle Creek Golf Club.

Leading the way for the Gophers was freshman Celia Kuenster's two-under-par 70, placing her in a tie for 10th place. Senior Anna Laorr and sophomore Emie Perronin are three strokes back, tied for 31st place at one-over 73. Freshman Sabrine Garrison fired an opening-round 75 (+3) placing her tied for 56th place while senior Carmen Laguna was one stroke behind her, tied for 66th place at four-over-par.

Kuenster is four strokes off the individual leader, Kendall Martindale of Vanderbilt, whose six-under-par 66 left her atop the standings.

The UCF Challenge continues Monday with the second of three rounds at Eagle Creek, beginning at 8:30 p.m. ET/7:30 a.m. CT.
