ROSEMONT, Ill. - Minnesota softball sophomore Sara Groenewegen was named the Big Ten Pitcher of the Week, the conference announced Monday afternoon. The honor was her third career Big Ten Pitcher of the Week accolade and sixth weekly conference award.
The reigning Big Ten Pitcher of the Year, Groenewegen was last named the conference's pitcher of the week Feb. 9.
Groenewegen pitched 13 innings over the weekend without allowing an earned run in complete game efforts against Mississippi State and UAB. The White Rock, B.C. native racked up 23 strikeouts and allowed just four hits. She matched a career-best 14 strikeouts in a 5-0 shutout of the Bulldogs, helping the Gophers match their best start in program history at 14-1.
Following her weekend performance, she leads all conference pitchers with an ERA of 0.56 and 106 strikeouts this season. She is 8-2 on the season.
Minnesota resumes its season next week with four games at the Louisville Slugger Classic in Palo Alto, Calif. The Gophers will play Stanford three times and will also take on Santa Clara.
