MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- Junior defender Haley Helverson and sophomore forward Simone Kolander have been named team captains of the University of Minnesota women's soccer team for the upcoming 2015 season.

"We are excited to announce Haley and Simone as our team captains moving forward," said Minnesota head coach Stefanie Golan. "Both of these young women are tremendous leaders whose leadership styles will complement each other to give our team everything we need to continue to grow every day. Haley and Simone have both grown a great deal in their time with the program, and it was clear to both the players and the staff that they are up to the task of providing internal leadership for our team."

Helverson, a native of West Des Moines, Iowa, has appeared in 61 games in three years for the Maroon and Gold where she has tallied six goals and six assists for 18 points. The Valley High School alumna was one of the four captains in 2014 where she anchored the backline that combined for eight team shutouts.

Kolander has appeared in 40 games for the Golden Gophers where she has scored seven goals and tallied 14 assists in her first two seasons at Minnesota. Last season, Kolander started each of the Gophers' 21 games and set a Minnesota program record for assists in a single match with four. She tallied five of her seven career goals in 2014 while taking 59 shots with 19 shots on target.

The Golden Gophers have three more games remaining in their spring season including a meeting with border rival and conference foe, Wisconsin, on April 18 in the Wisconsin Dells. Minnesota will welcome Minnesota State University, Mankato and South Dakota State University to Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium April 24 and 25 respectively to close out the spring campaign.
