LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- First-year Minnesota softball student-athlete Danielle Parlich has been named a top-25 finalist for the NFCA Freshman of the Year, the organization announced Thursday. The award will be presented prior to the start of the 2015 NCAA Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Parlich is the lone Big Ten finalist for the honor, which came into existence in 2014. Current sophomore Sara Groenewegen was a top-10 finalist last season.
A native of Queen Creek, Ariz., Parlich has helped guide Minnesota to a 34-7 on the season, starting all 41 of the team's games at second base. She leads the team with a .409 batting average and has a team-best 52 hits. She has struck out only seven times and has 26 runs batted in, six doubles, three triples and a home run.
In addition to reaching base in 38 of 41 games, Parlich has made big plays in the field, assisting in 10 double plays. She has also added nine stolen bases.
Coming off a seven-game homestand, the Gophers continue their Big Ten schedule this weekend with a trip to Michigan State.
