MINNEAPOLIS -- University of Minnesota women's tennis head coach Chuck Merzbacher announced Wednesday the signing of Camila Vargas to a National Letter of Intent. Vargas will join the Gophers beginning in the 2015-16 season.

A native of Peru, Vargas was a South American tournament finalist in an event that included teams made up of three players per country in 2014. In the same year, she achieved an International Tennis Federation ranking of 127 after reaching the Under-16 Orange Bowl doubles championship, entering the tournament as the second seed.

"Camila brings a strong and competitive international experience to the team," Merzbacher said. "She has played around the world and in the best tournaments year after year and has been successful."

Vargas, who represented her home country in the Fed Cup and Junior Fed Cup as a 16-year-old, won a gold medal in doubles at the International Youth Games. She also found success in doubles at the Eddie Herr Mixed Doubles tournament, reaching the semifinal round in 2012.

Her success reached a national level in 2010 when she earned Peruvian sub-12 national singles and doubles championships. She repeated the feat in the sub-16 age division in 2013.

"As you can see, she has been one of the best junior doubles players in the world and that is an important aspect of our program," said Merzbacher. "Her positive and competitive spirit is quite evident when you watch her play. She has all the intangibles needed for college team tennis. We are truly excited to add her into the program."
