COLUMBUS, Ohio - The No. 12/9 Minnesota softball team suffered a 2-0 loss at the hands of 10th-seeded Iowa in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Tournament Friday night in Columbus, Ohio. The loss dropped the Gophers' 2015 record to 46-9 and snapped the team's fourth win streak of eight of more games on the season.
Minnesota was shut out for just the third time this season.
Following two scoreless innings of play, Iowa jumped in front by two in the third with a two-run double by Holly Hoffman. That proved to be all the support Hawkeye starter Shayla Starkenburg would need as she allowed just six base runners on the evening.
Danielle Parlich and Hannah Granger produced the Maroon and Gold's only two hits of the night, but could not push any runs across in an attempt to erase the two-run deficit.Â
Parlich extended her team-best hit streak to 23 games in the loss. The top-10 finalist for the NFCA Freshman of the Year Award has now gotten on base in 52 of her 55 games played.
Sara Groenewegen was dealt a hard-luck loss in the circle as she tossed a complete game, allowing just three hits. The White Rock, B.C. native struck out 12 Iowa batters to up her season total to 344, the second-most in program history. Her 536-career strikeouts rank the sophomore fifth all-time in program history.
The Gophers will learn their NCAA Tournament fate Sunday night when the selection show airs at 9 p.m. CT on ESPNU.
