Margaret Eggert joined the Gopher Volleyball program in January 2015 after spending two years with Ole Miss. Transferring to Minnesota, Eggert played in 12 matches and 23 sets as a sophomore. She also appeared in 23 matches as a freshman. Prior to her time with Ole Miss, the Woodbury native played high school volleyball at East Ridge and the Kokoro Volleyball Club. Get to know Margaret in this short question/answer session.
Gophersports: You decided to transfer to Minnesota, what led to that decision?
Margaret Eggert: There were so many reasons why I decided to transfer to Minnesota. I grew up watching and admiring the Gopher Volleyball team and having the opportunity to play for the team I looked up to since I was little is a huge honor. I also love being close to home and my family. I really learned to appreciate that over the past couple of years being at a school across the country.
GS: How has your adjustment been not only to the sport but to a new school?
ME: The adjustment of transferring from Ole Miss to the U of M was easier than I expected. I assumed it was going to be a tough transition especially since the school and the volleyball program are very different from one another, but I had a lot of support from teammates, family, coaching staff, and academic counselors that made this a comfortable move.
GS: Did you know some of the Gopher student-athletes before you came to Minnesota?
ME: I knew a few athletes here at the U that I went to high school with and have seen so many familiar faces around campus. However, I have really enjoyed meeting new people. With a school this big it's nice to have some people you know but its easy to make new friends!
GS: You played in Japan and got to go on the trip. What was your favorite part and how did it help your game?
ME: The trip to Japan was a once in a life time opportunity! It was such a neat experience to play with another culture and really learn from one another. My favorite part was practicing with the Japan team. It was sometimes hard to communicate, which is a huge part of the game, but we made it work and had a lot of fun with each other!
ME: Having my family here at the end of the year scrimmage was so meaningful. So many of my family friends, neighbors, and relatives were able to make it and seemed to be just as excited as I was to be there and playing for the Gophers! When we finished and had time to say hello to everybody it was funny because the line of hugs just kept coming! I will never forget that feeling.
ME: Over the summer I plan to stay on campus, workout, and take classes. I'm also looking forward to being in Minnesota for the summer after two years of spending it training in Mississippi. There is really nothing better than a summer in Minnesota!
