Throughout the summer we will be getting an update on what some of the Golden Gopher women's tennis players are up to. We got the chance to ask Senior Jessika Mozia a couple questions to start this series.
Gopher Sports: What have you been up to so far this summer?
Jessika Mozia: This summer I will be back and forth between home (Colorado) and Minnesota. At the beginning of the summer, I was in Colorado hanging out with friends and family. I have been playing a lot of tennis and conditioning. I got certified by the PTR in teaching tennis and I have been helping my coach from home. I also helped and volunteered with Special Olympics, wheelchair tennis and star search which is a program that helps children with unfortunate and underprivileged backgrounds stay off the streets and get involved with something positive. Finally, I went to my cousin's high school graduation in Los Angeles, California. I am currently in Minnesota right now taking some classes and training. I will return back to Colorado at the beginning of August and will be taking a couple of trips with my family and friends before officially returning back to Minnesota in the fall.
GS: Have you seen any of the other players?
JM: Yes, I have seen quite a few players from the team. Three returning players, including myself are staying on campus for the majority of the summer taking classes and working on internships (Maja Vujic, Paula Rincon-Otero, and myself). Two graduating players are on campus too (Tereza Brichacova and Aria Lambert). I also saw Julia (Courter) the first couple of days when I came back onto campus. She picked me up from the airport. I have also seen one of our incoming freshmen, Caitlyn Merzbacher. I will be seeing another incoming freshmen, Annie (Emme) and returning sophomore, Caroline (Ryba), when they come back to campus for a couple of days in July.
GS: Do you have any favorite summertime jams?
JM: I do not have any favorite summertime jams. I love all types of music.
GS: Best Netflix show to binge watch?
JM: Right now, I am hooked on Grey's Anatomy. I am obsessed with it.
GS: If you could go on any vacation spot where would you go and why?
JM: If I could go on a vacation spot, I would go to the Bahamas. I have always wanted to go. I have seen pictures of it and it looks beautiful. Also, I hear that it is famous for its water slides and I do enjoy a good water park here and now.
GS: Funniest memory from the past tennis season?
JM: The funniest memory from the past tennis season was when we were on spring break in Fort Myers, Florida and Caroline (Ryba) got so sunburnt, she did not tan at all. Her whole body was pretty much covered in sunburn. When we returned to Minnesota, her burn finally started to turn into a faint tan so at least she could say she got a little tan. Another good memory is how for Christmas, we did secret Santa. Mehvish (Safdar) always loses her water bottles, so Kendall (Heitzner) was her secret Santa and got her a new water bottle. Turns out Mehvish found her old water bottle, then lost the new water bottle that Kendall got for her.
GS: Any big plans for the rest of the summer?
JM: I do not really have any big plans for the rest of the summer. I have a family reunion in North Carolina the beginning of August that I am excited to go to. Other than that, I am just going to continue training, relaxing, and enjoying the company of my family and friends.
GS: Most excited for when the school year starts back up?
JM: I am excited for the school atmosphere. It is so fun in the fall when everyone comes back onto campus. The football games are really fun to go to, we start our fall tournaments and the freshmen will officially be here on our team. The fall is just a great fun time. Plus it is still nice weather for the first couple weeks of it.
