Minnesota linebacker De'Vondre Campbell was named to the preseason watch list for the 2015 Butkus Award today. Campbell is one of 51 student-athletes named to the list, which annually recognizes the best linebacker in college football.

Campbell started all 13 games last season and finished third on the team with 75 tackles. He also had 6.5 tackles-for-loss and notched 2.5 sacks. The 6-5, 241-pound senior, who was also named Academic All-Big Ten, recovered three fumbles and returned his lone interception of the season for a 30-yard touchdown at Michigan.

Campbell came to Minnesota from Hutchinson Community College and has played 26 games for the Gophers. He has made 116 career tackles, which includes 9.5 tackles-for-loss and 2.5 sacks.

Campbell joins teammates Briean Boddy-Calhoun, Eric Murray and Peter Mortell in players who are on a preseason watch list. Boddy-Calhoun was named to the Lott IMPACT Trophy award watch list, while both he and Murray were named to the 2015 Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List. Mortell was named to the Ray Guy award watch list.

Minnesota has had eight players receive national awards for their play, with Matt Spaeth winning the 2006 John Mackey Award being the most recent. Gopher tight end Maxx Williams was a finalist for the Mackey Award in 2014.
