MINNEAPOLIS - The defending national champion Golden Gopher women's hockey team will host the Minnesota Whitecaps in an exhibition game this Friday. The preseason tune-up is set for 7 p.m. CT at Ridder Arena, and admission is free.
Fans attending the exhibition game should be aware that Minnesota's Homecoming Parade also begins at 7 p.m. Please plan accordingly for delays and street closures.
The Whitecaps are an elite, post-collegiate women's hockey team originally founded in 2004 by University of Minnesota Gopher alums Winny and Chelsey Brodt (last names now Brown and Rosenthal, respectively) along with their father Jack, as well as Dwayne and Jenny Schmidgall (now Potter). The Whitecaps were a franchise in the Western Women's Hockey League. Since 2010-11, the team has operated as an independent team playing various exhibition games each year.
The team's 35-player roster for 2015-16 includes former Gophers Rachael Bona, Bethany Brausen, Winny Brown, Sarah Erickson, Katie Frischmann, Kim Hanlon, Mira Jalosuo, Becky Kortum, Meghan Lorence, Laura May, Krissy Pohl, Noora Raty, Chelsey Rosenthal, Anne Schleper, and Kelly Seeler. The Whitecaps are coached by head coach Robb Stauber and assistant coaches Jack Brodt and Shivaun Siegl.
In addition to seeing some of their favorite former Gophers take the ice at Ridder Arena this Friday, fans have the opportunity to get their first look at Minnesota's 2015-16 squad, captained by Hannah Brandt and Lee Stecklein. Head coach Brad Frost returns for his ninth season behind the Minnesota bench, and the Gophers return 16 members of the 2015 NCAA national championship team while adding nine newcomers.
Following this week's exhibition game, the Gophers officially begin the regular season on the road at Penn State on Thursday, Oct. 1. Minnesota then hosts St. Cloud State in its home-opening series at Ridder Arena Oct. 9-10.
