Gophers Off To Hot Start At Gopher Invite

The University of Minnesota Gophers got their season off to a hot start at the Gopher Invite picking up two doubles draws victories while going 10-3 in singles play.
The doubles were split into 11 draws of four and got the tournament started this morning. A freshmen class that earlier this summer Coach Chuck Merzbacher said had potential to be his best class ever wasted no time attempting to prove him right. The freshmen duo of Camila Vargas Gomez and Annemarie Emme took a 6-0 victory finals before claiming a tough 7-5 win to kick of their collegiate careers.
Fellow freshman Caitlyn Merzbacher teamed up with senior Jessika Mozia to win their draw. Mehvish Safdar and Maja Vujic went 1-1 in doubles play today while Alexandra Bergman teamed up Drake's Summer Brills to go 1-1.
The Maroon and Gold looked unstoppable to start singles play with every player getting out of the first round of their draw. Four players competed in the tournament's top "A" Flight with wins from Mozia (6-0, 6-1), Safdar (6-3, 6-2) Vujic (6-0, 6-0) and Vargas Gomez (6-4, 6-1).
In the "B Flight Emme (6-1, 6-3) and Merzbacher (7-5, 6-3) kept their strong day going. Bergman got out the first round of the "C" Flight with a bye.
Emme and Merzbacher will each be looking at getting a step closer to the "B" Flight finals tomorrow after big second round wins as well. Emme picked up a (6-4, 6-3) win over Jocelle Rudico of Air Force and Merzbacher won (6-1,6-3) over Northern Illinois's Abigail Dekkinga.
The four players in the "A" Flight had their work cut out for them battling it out in the second round. Mozia and Safdar each escaped with victories while Vargas Gomez lost a heated match against Wisconsin's Maria Avgerinos and Vujic fell to NIU's Adey Osabuohien in a tight match.
Minnesota will start right back up tomorrow with all new doubles draws again at 9 a.m. followed by two more rounds of singles play.
