MINNEAPOLIS - The University of Minnesota women's soccer team ended their Sunday night matchup against the No.21-ranked Texas Tech Red Raiders in a draw after an aggressive match resulted in two overtimes at the John Walker Soccer Stadium in Lubbock, Texas.
With the draw, the Golden Gophers move to 3-1-2 on the season.
"I am really proud of our team's effort this weekend," said head coach Stefanie Golan. "We challenged both teams [Marquette and Texas Tech] in an incredible way. For us having to hop on a plane on Thursday to go play in Milwaukee and dig deep against Marquette for the win was amazing. Then, flipping around to come down to Texas to play in a very tough environment and be able to come away with a tie, is a very special moment for this program."
In the first period, each team fought aggressively on both sides of the ball, but Minnesota created most of the looks as they tallied five shots and forced Texas Tech to make three saves. Neither team had corner kicks opportunities, but Minnesota notched two fouls to the Red Raiders' one.
Taking the pitch after half, the Red Raiders upped their intensity, but Minnesota held strong. Texas Tech had ten shots to Minnesota's six and had four more corner kicks with six to the Gophers' two.
As the game neared the 90th minute of play, Texas Tech created some dangerous looks, but junior goalkeeper Tarah Hobbs wouldn't let anything get past her.
Hobbs was called upon seven times to make key grabs for the Maroon and Gold.
Moving into the first overtime, Minnesota notched two shots, but were unable to capitalize. Both teams also earned a single corner kick opportunity within the extra ten minutes, but the game would be forced to go into a second overtime.
Texas Tech got the lone shot on goal in the second OT, but with another save from Hobbs, the game would come to a close after a full 110 minutes with the teams knotted at zero.
On the night, Hobbs made a total of ten saves.
"I think this is the best game we've played thus far this season," said Hobbs. "I think we had an unbelievable effort from everybody. My teammates make my job easy. Going into next week, we'll refocus and it will be nice to play in front of our home crowd and hopefully, we'll get the results we want."
"We're definitely looking forward to traveling home tomorrow morning, sleeping in our own beds and after that, we'll gear up to rock the Robbie this weekend," said Golan.
LOOKING AHEAD
Following their return from back-to-back trips on the road, Minnesota will host two games back home at ELR. On Friday, Sept. 11, the Gophers will host a 7:00 p.m. match versus New Mexico. Action will return on Sunday, Sept. 13 for an afternoon game against Nebraska-Omaha. Game time is 1:00 p.m.
