HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter: Banham scored 15 of the 26 first quarter points for the Gophers, including three 3-pointers. The opening frame was back-and-forth, featuring seven lead changes and three ties, with Minnesota holding a three-point lead when the quarter came to a close.
Second Quarter: The Gophers started to pull away in the second quarter, leading by as many as 13. Wagner scored nine points and Starr grabbed five rebounds in the second. Northwestern tried to keep it close, but the Gophers went into the locker room with an 11-point halftime lead. Minnesota shot 53 percent from the field in the first, including 6-for-12 from beyond the arc.
Third Quarter: Banham showed her range in the third quarter, knocking down three 3-pointers, two of which were well beyond the arc. The Wildcats managed to claw their way back into the game, going on a 10-0 run in the middle of the quarter, and coming back from a deficit that at one point stretched to 16 points to tie the game at 74 at the end of the third. The quarter featured back-and-forth scoring from Banham and Coffey, with Coffey scoring 19 of her points in the frame.
Fourth Quarter: The fourth quarter was again a close battle, with the teams trading the lead throughout and each team leading within the last four minutes. Minnesota trailed by three before going on a 6-0 run with a Starr layup, a Karley Barnes putback on an offensive rebound and a Banham steal and layup. Minnesota led 86-63 with 2:40 to play. Northwestern scored before a Wagner bank-shot brought the Willliams Arena crowd to it's feet, and kept Minnesota in front 88-85 late in the game.
With under 40 seconds to play and trailing by three, the Wildcats started fouling, making the Gophers earn the victory at the line. Wagner, Bailey and Joanna Hedstrom shot a combined 7-for-8 on free throws down the final stretch to fight off the Wildcats last comeback effort.
