MINNEAPOLIS - The No. 3 Golden Gopher women's hockey team travels to St. Cloud State for its first road series of 2016 this weekend with puck drop set for 3 p.m. CT both Friday and Saturday.
Head coach Brad Frost and junior forward Dani Cameranesi met with the media to discuss last weekend against Minnesota State, the team's upcoming competitive schedule, and coaching milestones.
On playing well but struggling to score last weekend...
Frost: Yeah, it was a really tough weekend for us. I think the first night on Saturday, we were up 3-0 after two and had a couple of bad bounces, but I think we relaxed a little bit and ended up having to hang on for the win. On Sunday, we played exceptionally well. I think the shots were 35-4 after two periods and we were down 1-0. We just really told our players, 'Let's continue to stay with it, don't get frustrated, and lets see if we can get a bounce.' We finally did there in the third.
Cameranesi: I think with how well we played during the game, and even being trailing for so long, it just made the win that much more special.
On the upcoming competitive schedule...
Frost: We really have the top five teams in our league here the rest of the way. It's always our goal to be playing our best into February and March, and we are getting close to that point. We're going to get better every day and be ready for this weekend.
Cameranesi: Well, after the first half of the season, already tallying three losses, it's going to be huge for us the second half of the season to hopefully win all of our games because we didn't really leave much wiggle room for any losses in the second half. But, I'm very confident in our team and our playing ability with how we are practicing recently and everything. We have a good shot, but we just have to keep working hard and doing all of the little things and hopefully things will come together.
On Frost tying Laura Halldorson for all-time coaching wins with Gopher women's hockey...
Frost: That's interesting. I didn't even know that. There are two of us on the list and Laura built just an incredible program here and a great foundation. My hope after being her assistant seven years was to keep that tradition alive and continue to fulfill our values each and every day. For us, that's important. Yes, we've won a lot of games and I've had some great players and great coaches involved in our program in that time. This is definitely a program thing, and I just love where we're at.
Cameranesi: Yeah that's very cool, I actually didn't know that, I'll have to tell the rest of the girls. He's an amazing coach and we're surrounded by such great staff with all three of our coaches. They compliment us and we compliment them very well. I think he is the right man for that accomplishment, so that's really exciting.
On this weekend's series at St. Cloud State...
Frost: Going on the road to St. Cloud, St. Cloud over the last few years hasn't been the best team in our league, but they swept Ohio State last weekend and are in fourth or fifth place in our league and are playing exceptionally well. So, it's going to be a great challenge for us, it's the first time on the road in the second half. Anytime you play other Minnesota universities, it's always a big rivalry because there are so many Minnesota kids on those teams, in particular St. Cloud, who would like nothing more than to be at the Gophers. So, we know we have to be at our best.
