What are you most looking to improve on this season?
I’m looking to improve everything. All aspects. Leadership, handling the ball, rebounding the ball—everything.
Since you’ve already played a couple of games this season, do you think you already have improved a lot?
Oh yeah, most definitely. I believe I have improved a lot. I work hard, and I try to get better every game, every season, and every day.
How do you balance school and basketball?
It’s just part of the territory. It’s just something I have to do. It’s hard but you have to do it.
Do you have any tips for people who struggle with balancing all the activities they have going on in their life?
I think it’s a mentality thing. You just got to prepare to do things that you do and mentally prepare to do the things that you do. Maybe do something physical. Move your body around a little bit.
Who has influenced you the most in your basketball career?
My mother. She’s my biggest inspiration. After that is my family and myself. I say that because I know I’ve got people back home depending on me.
What do you miss about Florida?
The weather, of course.
Speaking of the weather, you’ve survived the winter here once, do you think you can do it again?
Yeah, I think I’m getting better at that. This winter hasn’t been anything like my first year so that’s great. I think the winter is going easy on me.
You had an incredible game against Michigan State last year, do you plan on bringing all that energy back for this year’s game against them?
It’s a new day, it’s a new team, it’s a new year. I’m not really thinking about last year. We want to win, but we aren’t thinking about last year. Hopefully I won’t have to hit a big shot to win again. I hope we just win.
Do you have any good memories from around the New Year?
Just being around family. That’s what brings me joy: being around family and seeing everyone be happy and smiling.
Where did the “Squirrel” nickname come from?
I’ve had that nickname since I was a baby. My granddad said I moved like a little squirrel and it stuck with me ever since.
Do your teammates call you Squirrel?
Last year they did, but this year they just call me Los.
If you were a kangaroo, what would you keep in your pouch?
I heard this question. Everybody said basketball so I’m going to go with something else. I want to say sneakers, but a kangaroo can’t wear shoes! I love shoes.
Do you collect shoes?
Yeah I’ve got about 40 pairs of shoes.
Where did the fascination with shoes come from?
I like to dress nice. And I like to have different shoes available so I can wear them whenever I want.
Do you have a favorite pair of shoes?
Yeah, Jordans. Jordans are my favorite type of shoe.
