Gophers Start Strong At Regionals

Tournament Draws
The University of Minnesota put up an impressive 8-2 singles match record on day one of the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships at Baseline Tennis Center.
Freshman Kalyssa Hall kicked off the day for the Gophers against Ann Selim of Oklahoma. Hall fell 6-3, 6-0. She will compete in the consolation draw tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
Tina Kreinis had the first win of the tournament for the Gophers as she defeated Katie Fries from Missouri-Kansas City 6-1, 6-4.
Fellow freshman Karyna Bihel came away with another Gopher win defeating Mariluz Rojo of St. Louis (6-3, 6-4).
In her Maroon and Gold debut, sophomore Barbara Mancera defeated fellow Big Ten player Lisa Andersson of Nebraska 6-4, 6-4.
Cammy Frei picked up a big win over the No. 17 seed Samantha Budai of Iowa State in the first round (6-3, 6-4).
Senior captain Maja Vujic made quick work of Nebraska-Omaha's Kenzie Hill defeating her 6-0, 6-0.
The No. 9 seed in the tournament is the Gophers' Caroline Ryba who defeated Claire Sullivan of Missouri 6-3, 6-1 in the round of 128.
Sophomore Camila Vargas Gomez defeated Ann-Christine Link 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the round of 64.
Annemarie Emme fell 6-2, 6-7(3), 2-6 to the No. 17 seeded Tanaporn Thongsing of Wichita State.
Mehvish Safdar finished off the night with a 6-1, 6-2 win for the Gophers. She played against Shannon O'Brien of Arkansas State.
Tomorrow Minnesota will start off the day at 8 a.m. with Caitlyn Merzbacher teaming up with Safdar for the first round of doubles matches. You can follow the Gophers as they compete on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
