Gophers Collect More Wins On Day Two

The University of Minnesota collected four singles wins and two doubles wins on day two of the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships at Baseline Tennis Center.

Two student-athletes advanced to the round of 32 in the singles main draw while two pairs of Gophers will be competing in the round of 32 in the doubles main draw.

Doubles
Caitlyn Merzbacher and Mehvish Safdar started off the day for the Gophers. They fell 6-8 to the No. 9 seeded duo from Tulsa.

Karyna Bihel and Maja Vujic also fell in their first doubles match. They were defeated by a pair from Kansas State 5-8.

Annemarie Emme and Tina Kreinis teamed up for a Minnesota doubles win (8-1) over Nebraska-Omaha. They will play in the round of 32 tomorrow at 9 a.m.

The second doubles win for the Gophers came when Cammy Frei and Caroline Ryba won a close match versus Iowa 8-7(4). The duo will play again tomorrow at 10 a.m. against a pair from Drake.

Barbara Mancera and Camila Vargas Gomez teamed up for the first time Friday. They fell 4-8 to Oklahoma.

Singles
Kreinis started the singles match play for the Gophers on day two. She fell 1-6, 4-6 to Shannon Hudson of Arkansas.

Bihel played hard in a close match with Nebraska's Claire Reifeis but ended up falling 6-4, 6-0, 6-3.

After a strong first singles match for the Gophers, Mancera ended up being defeated 2-6, 1-6 to Brianna Lashway of Missouri.

Frei advanced to the round of 32 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Thanushree Vale of Missouri-Kansas City. She was then defeated by Kansas's Janet Koch 1-6, 4-6.

Vujic's day came to an end after falling to Tatiana Nikolaeva of Kansas 6-1, 6-3.

Ryba was able to advance to the round of 32 after defeating South Dakota State's Zorka Sviban 6-0, 6-0. She then defeated Mimi Fotopoulos of Oklahoma 7-5, 6-2 to advance to the round of 16.

A seven-match win streak for Vargas Gomez was snapped today. She lost to Aliona Bolsova of Arkansas State 1-6, 1-6.

Freshman Kalyssa Hall ended up falling in the consolation bracket 4-6, 0-6. She played Allison Quammen of Arkansas State.

Emme rebounded after a first round loss and won her first consolation match 6-2, 6-2. She defeated Katherine Nelsen of Creighton.

Each player that lost in the round of 64 will play tomorrow in a new consolation bracket.
