Gophers Pick Up Five More Wins At Regionals

Multiple Golden Gophers advanced in the main and consolation draws at the USTA/ITA Central Region Championships Saturday at Baseline Tennis Center.

The Maroon and Gold picked up four single match victories and one doubles match victory.

Doubles
Annemarie Emme and Tina Kreinis began the day for the Gophers as they played in the main doubles draw round of 32. They ended up falling to Amina Ismail and Beatrz Machado Santos of Missouri 8-5.

Cammy Frei and Caroline Ryba ended up advancing to the round of 16 in the main doubles draw after defeating Drake's Summer Brills and Joely Lomas 8-6. In the round of 16, the Minnesota duo fell 8-4 to a pair from Kansas.

Caitlyn Merzbacher and Mehvish Safdar advanced to the consolation draw quarterfinals when they won versus Missouri State's Alye Darter and Anelisse Torrico. They will play tomorrow at 9 a.m.

Senior captain Maja Vujic and freshman Karyna Bihel were defeated in the consolation draw to a duo from Iowa (8-2).

Freshman Kalyssa Hall teamed up with Camila Vargas Gomez for a match in the consolation draw because Barbara Mancera had to leave with an injury. They fell 8-6 to Ellie Burns and Nanette Nylund of South Dakota.

Singles
Ryba played in the singles main draw round of 16 but her winning streak was snapped by the No. 5 seed Aliona Bolsova of Oklahoma State (6-3, 6-3).

Emme played in the singles consolation draw round of 16 and fell 6-4, 6-3 to Iasmin Rose of South Dakota State.

Kreinis also fell 6-4, 6-2 to Katerina Matysova of Nebraska. Another Husker, M'Balia Bangoura, defeated Bihel in the consolation draw 7-5, 6-2.

Oklahoma's Serena Nash defeated Frei in a tough played consolation match 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(9).

Hall picked up her first singles win of the weekend with a 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(7) win over Morgan Brower of South Dakota State.

Safdar added another singles win to her record after defeating All McKenzie of St. Louis 6-2, 6-4.

Tomorrow the action once again begins at 9 a.m. with the main draw and consolation draw doubles quarterfinals.
