Minnesota (3-0) will host its second BIG EAST opponent of the weekend, Seton Hall (3-0), on Sunday, Nov. 20 at 2 p.m. The game at Williams Arena will be live streamed on BTN Plus and air on KBEM 88.5 FM.
The game will also serve as Whitney Tinjum's (Stacy, Minn.) community day. She and Carlie Wagner will sign autographs following the game.
Here are five things to know before the Gophers and Pirates take the court:
1 The Gophers are looking for their third consecutive 4-0 start under head coach Marlene Stollings. It would be the first three-year stretch of four-win starts in program history. Before the 2014-15 and 2015-16 seasons, the only other back-to-back starts of at least 4-0 for the Gophers were 2002-03 and 2003-04.
2 Minnesota's first three wins of the season came against 2016 WNIT teams. Sunday's opponent, Seton Hall, played in the NCAA Tournament. The Gophers have their strongest schedule in recent years, and will face at least six non-conference teams who played in the 2016 NCAA Tournament. Two of those teams are ranked in this week's AP Top 25. (More on p. 2.)
3 Junior and 2016 All-Big Ten Second Team selection Carlie Wagner is averaging 24.7 points per game (15th in the country and second in the Big Ten through Nov. 18), with at least 21 points in all three games. She passed Kelly Roysland (1,074) on the Gophers' career scoring list and is in 17th place with 1,078 points. She will be honored as a member of the 1,000-point club at Sunday's game. Wagner has 37 consecutive games in double figures.
4 The Golden Gophers have had a different player post a double-double in each of their first three games. Freshman Taiye Bello scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds in her debut against Harvard. At VCU Jessie Edwards tallied 12 points and 11 rebounds. Against Georgetown Kenisha Bell (10 points, 10 assists) had Minnesota's first points-assists double-double since Jan. 22, 2015.
5 Junior center Jessie Edwards leads the Gophers in both rebounding and blocks. She has started all three games, and pulled down 24 rebounds (8.0 per game) and blocked seven shots (2.3 per game). She is third in the Big Ten in blocks and ninth in rebounds through Nov. 18. Edwards led Minnesota with 41 blocks (1.3 per game) last season. She has five career games with four blocks, and 12 games with at least two.
SCOUTING THE PIRATES
• Seton Hall, like Minnesota, is 3-0 entering Sunday's game. The Pirates have beaten Savannah State, Marist and Boston College.
• Head coach Anthony Bozzella is in his fourth season at his alma mater. He guided the Pirates to NCAA Tournament appearances in each of the last two seasons.
• Seton Hall's roster includes nine freshmen. Guard Kaela Hilaire has led her class with 14.3 points per game.
• Guards JaQuan Jackson and LaTecia Smith played in the first two games, averaging 19.5 and 14.0 points per game, respectively.
• Guard/forward Martha Kuderer is from Eden Prairie, Minn., and Claire Lundberg is from Anoka.
• The Pirates have a +5.3 turnover margin, and tallied 20 steals at Marist.
COMING UP NEXT
Minnesota will travel to the Bahamas for the Junkanoo Jam (Nov. 24-26), facing 2016 NCAA Tournament team Georgia in the opening round. The Gophers will then face either North Carolina or South Florida. Minnesota's next home game will be against 2016 Sweet 16 qualifier Florida State on Nov. 30. The Big Ten/ACC Challenge matchup will tip off at 6 p.m.
