Four Nations Cup Update: Days 1 and 2

MINNEAPOLIS - Senior Lee Stecklein and five former Gophers are competing for their respective countries this week in Vierumäki, Finland at the Four Nations Cup. Megan Bozek, Hannah Brandt, and Anne Schleper are representing the United States along with Stecklein, while Sarah Davis is skating for Canada, and Noora Raty is in net for her native Finland.
The Four Nations Cup began with four preliminary round games on Tuesday and Wednesday with the U.S. and Canada both picking up a pair of wins over Sweden and Finland. The preliminary round concludes on Friday, and the bronze- and gold-medal games are set for Saturday.
Game 1: United States 6, Sweden 0
The United States opened the tournament with a 6-0 victory over Sweden. Among the Gophers to get points were Bozek (1g), Brandt (2g) and Schleper (1a). Brandt was also named the team's player of the game.
Bozek scored the Red, White and Blue's first goal of the tournament in the first period, followed by Brandt's power-play goal just under four minutes later. Brandt scored her second goal of the game to give the United States a 6-0 lead in the third period.

Game 2: Canada 3, Finland 0
Canada topped Finland by a score of 3-0 to start off the tournament. Canada opened the game with two goals in the first period, before netting its final goal early in the third period. Despite the loss, Noora Raty played a solid game in net for Finland, making 32 saves.

Game 3: United States 4, Finland 0
The United States remained undefeated after winning its second game of the tournament against Finland. Neither team could find the back of the net until the Red, White and Blue scored two goals in the second period. Team USA was able to score two more goals in the third period, in order to pick up a 4-0 win. Former Gopher Noora Raty made a solid 35 saves against the United States during the game.

Game 4: Canada 3, Sweden 1
Canada won its second game of the tournament by a score of 3-1. Sweden took the early lead in the game, but Canada answered near the end of the first period. Just over halfway through the second period, Canada netted a power-play goal to make it a 2-1 game. During the third period, Canada scored an empty-net goal to secure a 3-1 victory against Sweden.

Friday's preliminary round games include host Finland facing Sweden at 8 a.m. CT before the U.S. takes on rival Canada at 11:30 a.m. CT. The bronze-medal game is set for 7 a.m. CT Saturday with the gold-medal game to follow at 10:30 a.m. CT Saturday.
