STARTING FIVE
• The University of Minnesota men's basketball team hits the road for just the third time this season, and second at an opponent's venue, as the Gophers travel to 15th-ranked Purdue on Sunday afternoon. Minnesota's last five matchups against the Boilermakers have been decided by five points or fewer.
• The Gophers are taking the court on New Year's Day for just the ninth time in program history, and the second in Big Ten competition. Minnesota is 5-3 in games played on Jan. 1, including a 61-56 road loss at Michigan in 2012, their last New Year's Day game. The Gophers have wins over Nebraska (1934), Lawrence (1945), Colgate (1949), Oral Roberts (2003) and Coppin State (2005) on New Year's Day, with losses at George Washington (1938), at Texas Tech (2004) and in Ann Arbor.
• Minnesota received eight votes in the Associated Press poll, marking their fourth consecutive appearance there. In the latest edition of the NCAA Ratings Percentage Index (RPI), the Gophers stand in 20th place.
• Redshirt junior Reggie Lynch sits among the nation's leaders in blocked shots. The Edina, Minn. native now has 43 blocks on the season, leading both the team and ranked second in the Big Ten Conference and sixth nationally with an average of 3.2 blocks per game. He is spearheading the Minnesota team blocking effort which is second in the Big Ten and ranks 10th in Division I at 6.4 blocks per game.
• The Gophers have been able to hang their hat on defense this season thus far. Minnesota is allowing opponents to connect on just 37.7 percent of their field goal attempts, ranking second in the Big Ten in field goal percentage defense and 17th nationally in that category. In addition, Minnesota is also fifth in total blocks (89), 12th in defensive rebounds per game (29.9), and 14th in 3-point field goal defense (28.4 percent - 1st in B1G) in the NCAA rankings (as of Dec. 30).

SCOUTING THE BOILERMAKERS
• Purdue enters its second Big Ten contest with a 12-2 record, but coming off a 89-67 home victory against Iowa on Wednesday.
• National Player of the Year candidate Caleb Swanigan is leading the Boilermakers on offense, scoring 17.8 points and 12.4 rebounds per game. He leads the nation with 11 double-doubles on the season.
• Purdue's two losses came to a pair of ranked foes, then-No. 3 and current No. 1 Villanova on Nov. 14 in the Gavitt Tipoff Games, and then-No. 14 Louisville in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge on Nov. 30.

MURPHY'S BIG NIGHT
• Sophomore Jordan Murphy came into the season as one of the top returners for the Gophers, and Tuesday night against Michigan State he put together one of his best performances.
• The San Antonio native pulled down a career-high 21 rebounds to go with 12 points for his fifth double-double of the season and 14th of his career.
• Murphy's rebounding total ties for the seventh-highest in program history, matching Melvin Northway's total on Feb. 16, 1965 at Wisconsin.
• Additionally it is the most rebounds by a Gopher since Jim Brewer had 22 against Marquette on Mar. 18, 1972.
• He broke Northway's record of 20 rebounds as the highest total by a Gopher against MIchigan State in 115 total games against the Spartans.
• Murphy grabbed the most rebounds in a Big Ten game since Indiana's D.J. White had 22 against Michigan in the 2007-08 season, and he was the first Gopher to cross the 20-rebound mark since Richard Coffey did so on Dec. 30, 1987 against Grambling State.
