In honor of Black History Month, Gopher Athletics is celebrating those who made us great. Throughout February, GopherSports.com will share short interviews with African-American alumni from almost every Gopher program. In these interviews, former student-athletes reflect on their time at the U of M, provide advice to current Gophers and share what Black History Month means to them personally.

What is it you honestly miss most about the University?
Team camaraderie and the relationships that are formed. You just cannot duplicate relationships like that â€" they are life-lasting.

If you could give the current student-athletes any piece of advice, what would it be?
Make sure to enjoy every second, every minute and massage it to the fullest. Those relationships, both personally and professionally, will become your family as you decide to stay in Minnesota for a lifetime.

Please share your favorite university or athletic event you've attended since you graduated and what made it so special to you?
Just going to the home football games. Being a former football player and seeing the growth of the program that all football players have contributed to is huge. When I came up here, we had the Metrodome Stadium and now, I was able to see the transition from an off-site stadium to an on-campus stadium. Also, seeing how the football team has become successful not only on the field but, as we saw with the bowl game selection, we were successful in the classroom. That makes me very, very proud.

What are you grateful for?
Honestly, I'm grateful for the University of Minnesota education and the avenues created by being associated with the athletics department. I am extremely, extremely grateful because it has developed the person who I am â€" a partner at an international law firm â€" and I could not have developed those skills anywhere else other than in the Athletics Department in Bierman.

What does Black History Month mean to you?
Black History is American History. Celebrating the unique set of cultural circumstances and individuals that proudly took upon themselves on behalf of all to positively shape the landscape of the United States. Black History is essential to the fundamental American ideology that we are one nation, indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
