Caroline Ryba has been named the Big Ten Athlete of the Week for the first time in her career, the league announced Tuesday.
She went 4-0 on the weekend with two wins at the No. 2 doubles spot alongside Julia Courter and two wins at the No. 1 singles spot. The biggest victory of her weekend came against No. 44 Lauren Chyphya with Ryba winning 7-6 (4), 7-5 to seal the sixth straight Border Battle win for the Gophers.
The two doubles victories were both comebacks to seal the doubles point for Minnesota with a 7-6 (8) win over Sydney Rider and Ekaterina Stepanova of Wisconsin and a 7-6 (0) victory over Utah's Sarah Richter and Alexia Petrovic (UTAH) 7-6 (7-0). Ryba completed the weekend with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Margo Pletcher.
Ryba and Courter are 6-1 together this season while Ryba holds a 10-6 singles record.
The last Gopher to win a women's tennis athlete of the week award was Natallia Pintusava on March 6, 2012.
The Maroon and Gold are back at Baseline this weekend for matches against Buffalo and Iowa State.
