Guard Amir Coffey, who signed his letter of intent to play for the Minnesota men's basketball team in November, was selected as the top player in the state on Monday, earning Mr. Basketball honors.
Coffey (Hopkins, Minn./Hopkins HS) will become the 30th Mr. Basketball honoree to suit up for the Maroon and Gold, and the first since Andre Hollins and Joe Coleman earned the honors in Tennessee and Minnesota, respectively, in 2011.
Chosen from five finalists including fellow future Gophers forward Michael Hurt (Rochester, Minn./John Marshall HS), Coffey led his Royals team to the Class 4A state championship last week after a season in which he averaged 19.9 points per game. He was also selected the Star Tribune's Metro Player of the Year.
Coffey, who is a consensus top-50 recruit nationally, will join Hurt and forward Eric Curry (Little Rock, Ark./Southwest Christian Academy) as newcomers in the Gophers lineup next fall.
