Gophers Head to World Championships

2016 IIHF Women's World Championship

MINNEAPOLIS - Four Gophers will represent their respective countries at the 2016 IIHF Women's World Championship, which will take place Monday, March 28 through Monday, April 4 in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Junior Lee Stecklein and alum Megan Bozek ('13) will compete for the United States, while Sarah Davis ('14) will skate for Canada and Mira Jalosuo ('13) will represent her native Finland.

The tournament begins with preliminary round games in two groups; Group A and Group B. Group A is comprised of Canada, United States, Finland and Russia, and in Group B is Sweden, Switzerland, Japan and Czech Republic.

Preliminary round games are schedule for Monday, March 28 through Thursday, March 31 with each team playing three games. Following the preliminary round, the game schedule will be determined based on team records. Quarterfinal games are set for Friday, April 1 with semifinals on Sunday, April 3. The gold and bronze medal games are set for Monday, April 4.

The U.S. is the defending champion and has played Canada in the gold medal game in all 16 of the previous IIHF Women's World Championships, capturing the event's top prize a total of six times (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015), including five of the last six tournaments. Meanwhile, Canada has won 10 gold medals (1990, 1992, 1994, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2004, 2007 and 2012) and six silver (2005, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013 and 2015).
