The University of Minnesota women's basketball team handed out awards and socialized at its annual year-end banquet on Monday night. To cap off the event at TCF Bank Stadium's Indoor Club Room, head coach Marlene Stollings informed the crowd that during dinner Rachel Banham had been named a top-five finalist for the John R. Wooden Award.
In addition to accepting their "M" Club pins as athletics alumni, all three seniors won awards. Banham was named Team MVP and recipient of the Fast Break Club Award. She was also named an AP All-America First Team selection the same day. Banham led the Gophers with 28.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season as she set numerous records and caught the nation's attention.
Shayne Mullaney was tabbed Sixth Player of the Year. Coming off the bench for much of the season, she was the Gophers' third leading scorer with 9.8 points per game. Mullaney averaged a team-high 4.3 assists per game and notched her first two career 20-point games this year.
Mikayla Bailey received the Hustle Award and the FBC's Love of the Game Award. She has been known to take a charge, dive for a loose ball and sprint after an errant pass. Bailey's contributions this season were her most visible on the stat sheet, as she averaged a career-high 7.4 points per game.
Junior Joanna Hedstrom took home multiple honors as the Academic Excellence Award and FBC Breakout Award recipient. The junior received CoSIDA Academic All-District and Academic All-Big Ten recognition this year and is on track to earn her degree early and enter graduate school. On the court, Hedstrom's production skyrocketed from that of her first two seasons. She heated up most during Big Ten season, where she averaged 8.1 points per game.
Sophomore Carlie Wagner won the Iron Gopher Award for her commitment to strength and conditioning. She played the most minutes on the team, averaging 37.8 per game. Wagner has the team's lowest resting heart rate and a fast recovery time during workouts.
Karley Barnes, Jessie Edwards, Kynadi Johnson, Annalese Lamke and Allina Starr received their "M" letter jackets as first-time letterwinners.
