Groenewegen Garners B1G Award

Sara Groenewegen has been named B1G Co-Player of the Week earning the honor for the second time this season, the conference announced Monday.

Groenewegen had a big weekend leading the Gophers to a sweep over Rutgers. She hit .556 at the plate with a 1.333 slugging percentage and an on base of .636. She smacked two home runs including the first score of the third game with a solo homer as the Gophers went on to win in a run rule. She also added four RBI, a double, was walked twice and had three assists in the field.

In the circle Groenewegen was untouchable this weekend. She pitched 8.2 innings not allowing a single run and only one hit with two wins. She struck out 15 batters and held the opposing batters to just a .037 batting average. In the final game of the weekend she had a no-hitter going through three innings but was pulled as the Gophers had accumulated a big lead.

On the season Groenewegen is hitting .313 with five doubles, eight home runs and 26 RBI. She has a slugging percentage of .606 and an on base percentage of .493 getting walked 29 times. She has a 21-5 record bolstered by a 1.76 ERA. She sits third in the NCAA with 237 strikeouts.

Groenewegen was named the B1G Player of the Week on March 28 for the first time in her career and has won four B1G Pitcher of the Week accolades this season giving her 10 total in her career. Last week was placed on the Top-25 finalist for the 2016 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year.

The Gophers are back in action at home this weekend for a big series against Nebraska.
