USA Volleyball announced 36 players who will train and compete as part of the U.S. Collegiate National Team-Indianapolis program. Minnesota will have two representatives on this team in middle blocker Kayla Buford and setter Erica Handley. It's the first collegiate national team experience for the duo.
The squad, which is part of USA Volleyball's High Performance pipeline and is considered a second
tryout for the U.S. Women's National Team, will train and compete from June 21-30 in Indianapolis,
Indiana. After the program is divided into three 12-player rosters from the training portion, the competition phase involving a round-robin tournament of the three squads will take place June 26-29 under the same roof as the USA Volleyball Girls' Junior National Championships. Athletes were selected through the U.S. Women's National Team Open Tryouts held Feb. 19-21 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Buford, hailing from Canton, Mich., finished her first year as a Golden Gopher after seeing action in four matches her rookie campaign as she contributed three blocks. Handley, from Lakeville, Minn., has been with the Gopher program for two years and has played in 66 career sets and 27 matches for the Maroon and Gold. While at Minnesota, Handley has 525 assists, 28 blocks and 97 digs.
With the addition of Buford and Handley, Minnesota will have four student-athletes on the USA Volleyball's Collegiate National Teams. Alyssa Goehner and Molly Lohman were named to the CNT Europe Tour earlier this year.
