Tharaldsen Wins Shot Put at NDSU

FARGO, N.D. (GopherSports.com) - Jonathan Tharaldsen picked up his third shot put title of the year on Friday, winning the six-kilogram competition at the NDSU Tune-Up to lead a contingency of Gopher throwers at the meet.
A Bismarck, N.D. native and the 2014-15 Gatorade North Dakota Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year, Tharaldsen paced the shot put field with his winning toss of 18.18 meters (59-07.75 ft.). The unattached freshman also added a sixth-place finish in the discus at 48.67 meters (159-08 ft.) as one of four Gophers in the top 10.
Bryan Bjerk finished third in the discus at 50.69 meters (166-04 ft.) while Viktor Stelter came in fifth with a personal record at 49.47 meters (162-04 ft.). Unattached freshman John Marita added an eighth-place showing with his own personal record at 44.48 meters (145-11 ft.).
In the hammer throw competition, Mac Riedy added a third-place finish at 57.99 meters (190-03 ft.) while Stelter notched an additional fifth-place performance at 55.54 meters (182-03 ft.).
The University of Minnesota returns to action next weekend at the 2016 Big Ten Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Lincoln, Neb.
