All-Big Ten and MLB Draft selections Matt Fiedler and Austin Athmann added another accolade to their names as both were tabbed ABCA/Rawlings Mideast All-Region Second Team honorees. Members of the American Baseball Coaches Association voted on the awards.
As a junior in 2016, Fiedler was the Gophers' first Big Ten Player of the Year since 2003. He was a semifinalist for the John Olerud Two-Way Player of the Year, and a CoSIDA Second-Team Academic All-American. Fiedler batted .366 while leading the Gophers with 87 hits and 14 stolen bases. He started 16 games on the mound and ranked second on the team with 89 2/3 innings pitched.
Athmann hit a team-best 11 home runs as a junior, the highest total for a Minnesota player since 2010. The All-Big Ten catcher was the Gophers' top hitter for average (.374) and slugging (.621). Athmann set career highs with 73 hits 42 RBI and 15 doubles.
Following the end of the Gophers' season, Athmann and Fielder became the program's first position players drafted in five years. The St. Louis Cardinals chose Fiedler in the ninth round, while Athmann went to the Detroit Tigers in the 14th.
