Gophers Announce 2016 Griak Hall of Fame Class

MINNEAPOLIS (GopherSports.com) - The University of Minnesota and the Gophers athletic department are proud to announce the 2016 Roy Griak Invitational Hall of Fame class, highlighting eight individuals who have made immeasurable contributions to one of the nation's top cross country events.

The eight inductees in this year's class are Missy (Buttry) Rock, Katie Flood, Bill Miles, Jo Rider, Tyler Sigl, Martin Smith, Kim Smith and Matt Tegenkamp.

The 2016 Roy Griak Hall of Fame class will be honored during this year's 31st annual Roy Griak Invitational, set for Saturday, Sept. 24 at Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, Minn.

About the 2016 Roy Griak Invitational Hall of Fame Class

Missy Rock (Wartburg) | The most decorated cross country athlete in NCAA DIII women's history…first women in NCAA history to win three-consecutive NCAA cross country titles…also won 11 NCAA track titles…totaled 18 All-America honors…won the Griak Invitational Women's Maroon II competition in 2002…current assistant coach at Bethel.

Katie Flood (Dowling Catholic High School) | The only runner in Griak Invitational history to win three individual high school titles…two-time NCAA champion and six-time All-American at Washington.

Bill Miles (Wazata High School) | Long-time coach at Wayzata…led the program to five Griak Invitational high school team titles, eight state titles cross country and five state titles in track & field.

Jo Rider (Minnesota) | Long-time University of Minnesota Athletics staff member and Roy Griak Invitational administrator.

Tyler Sigl (UW-Platteville) | First person in Griak Invitational history to win three-straight individual titles at the college/university level (still one of only two competitors to do so along with 2015 Griak Hall of Fame inductee Morgan Place)…won back-to-back Maroon II Competition titles (2005-06) before winning the first-ever Maroon III race in 2007.

Martin Smith (Wisconsin/Oklahoma/Iowa State) | Five-time NCAA championship coach…led the Wisconsin men's program to the first three team titles in Griak Invitational history (1986-88)…seven overall Griak Invitational team titles as well as two individual champions…current coach at Iowa State.

Kim Smith (Providence) | Back-to-back Griak Invitational individual champion (2003, 2004) and one of only three women to win two titles in the Jack Johnson Women's Gold (Division I) Competition …four-time NCAA champion at Providence…three-time Olympian.

Matt Tegenkamp (Wisconsin) | One of just three men to win two Griak Invitational Merrill Fischbein Men's Gold (Division I) Competitions (2001, 2004)…two-time Olympian.
