Gophersports.com caught up with incoming freshman Brittany McLean as she finishes her high school career and is set to embark on her college career this summer. McLean, from Rosemount, Minn., played with Rosemount High School and Northern Lights. An Under Armour All-American, McLean earned six All-America nods during her high school and club career. The outside hitter was also named the Ms. Baden award winner, given to the top senior in the state of Minnesota. Check out this short question/answer session from the freshman.
Gophersports.com: When did you get into volleyball?
Brittany McLean: I got into volleyball in third grade.
GS: What has been your favorite volleyball memory so far?
BM: My favorite volleyball memory is being down 9-14 in the National Semi Final and coming back to win it 20-18 in 2014.
GS: You played in the Under-Armour All-America game. Talk about that experience and even playing with some of your fellow freshmen teammates.
BM: The Under Armour game was a little overwhelming at first because of all of the gear we got, and having it be a packed schedule the moment we got there. However, to have the opportunity to play with the best and on the national championship court, there's nothing like it. I love every second of it. Having Lexi and Regan there was even better because it was fun playing on the same side of the net as them for the first time.
GS: What drew you to Minnesota and what ultimately led you to join Gopher Volleyball?
BM: Being from the area, what really drew me to Minnesota was the atmosphere of the Sports Pavilion and the game day experience. The gym and matches are great and the fans are awesome. The team culture also really stood out to me. They have each other's backs and I'm very excited to be a part of that.
GS: Any idea of what you'd like to major in academically?
BM: Right now I have my mind set to major in kinesiology with the intention of the physical therapy field.
GS: What are you most excited for in the 2016 season?
BM: I'm very excited to be a part of this team, to get better, and to finally call myself a Gopher.
