Esser Takes Bronze at NACAC U23 Championship

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador - University of Minnesota junior Agnes Esser finished third in both the hammer throw and the discus while competing for her native Canada at the 2016 NACAC U23 Championships in San Salvador, El Salvador, Friday.

The McBride, British Columbia, native earned two bronze medals, throwing 58.44m (191-09) for third in the hammer throw before securing another third-place finish in the discus (51.50m, 168-11).

Esser earned her first All-American award of her career this spring, earning second team honors with a 15th-place showing in the discus (52.61m, 172-07) at the NCAA Championship; she also wrapped up her sophomore year as Minnesota's program record holder in the discus (57.91m, 190-00).

The Gophers' summer competitions continue with Shanique Wright competing for her native Jamaica at the IAAF World U20 Championships in Bydgoszcz, Poland, July 19-24. Wright is scheduled to compete in the triple jump qualifying round at 4:50 p.m. CT on Friday, July 22 with the final to follow at 3:40 p.m. CT on Saturday, July 23.
