MINNEAPOLIS - University of Minnesota women's hockey assistant coach Nadine Muzerall has been named an assistant coach for Canada's National Women's Development Team for the 2016-17 season, Hockey Canada announced Tuesday.
Muzerall will serve as a member of the coaching staff with head coach Noémie Marin (Acton Vale, Que./John Abbott College, CEGEP), fellow assistant coach Amanda Benoit-Wark (Welland, Ont./Ridley College, CAHS), and goaltending coach Max Joyal (Saint-Joseph-de-Beauce, Que./Limoilou, CEGEP).
Canada's National Women's Development Team selection camp is scheduled for Aug. 5-14 in Calgary, followed by a three-game series against the United States' Women's Under-22 Select Team from Aug. 17-21. It will also participate at the Nations Cup in Germany in January 2017.
A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Muzerall has spent five seasons as an assistant coach with the Gophers after she joined the staff in October 2011. Muzerall has helped coach the Gophers to four national titles and five-straight NCAA national championship game appearances. She previously served as a camp coach for Canada's National Women's Development Team and Canada's National Women's Under-18 Team selection camps.
"We're thrilled with the coaching staff that will lead our women's development and under-18 teams through the 2016-17 season," said Melody Davidson, general manager of national women's team programs with Hockey Canada. "These programs are the building blocks towards Canada's National Women's Team, and we continue to focus on developing our coaches. I'm confident this group will help grow these programs as they lead their teams at camps and international events."
Muzerall, who played for Minnesota from 1997-2001, has been involved in hockey since graduating from the University of Minnesota, playing professional hockey in Switzerland and coaching girls varsity hockey before joining the collegiate coaching ranks.
As a Gopher hockey player, Muzerall collected many awards and honors. She was a two-time All-American, earning the honor in 1998 and 2000. Muzerall was a finalist for the Patty Kazmaier Award as a freshman in 1998 and again in her senior year, 2001. During Muzerall's tenure, the Gophers won the AWCHA National Championship in 2000 and the WCHA Championship in 2001. She is still Minnesota's all-time career goals leader with 139 and the career leader in goals per game with 1.08.
