Margaret Eggert is entering her senior year with Gopher Volleyball. Eggert, hailing from Woodbury, Minn., joined the Minnesota program after a two-year stint at Ole Miss. Coming into the program in January of 2015, Eggert is set to begin her final Gopher season. As a junior, she saw action in three matches as Minnesota went on to win the Big Ten title. Here's what Margaret had to say since her Gopher arrival and what's ahead in the 2016 season.
Gophersports.com: How much has changed in your career since you arrived on campus?
Margaret Eggert: Everything has changed. I have changed as a person, and met life long friends and mentors that have made me who I am today. I have grown and matured and most importantly, I have learned how to manage the unique life of being a college athlete which will benefit me far beyond graduation.
GS: Now as a senior, what are your responsibilities?
ME: The seniors are responsible for maintaining the great culture we have here at Minnesota. That means remaining inclusive with one another, being a good teammate, working hard, and always focusing on the learning process.
GS: If there was one thing the senior self of you could tell when starting out as a freshman, what would it be?
ME: I would tell my freshman self to take a step back and just embrace everything; embrace the excitement of the fans and even embrace the toughest workouts because the four years goes by so fast and it is such a cool/rare experience we, college athletes, get to live.
GS: Minnesota only had one starting senior last year, this year, a more seasoned team. What will it take for the Gophers to be successful again in 2016?
ME: Our success relies more on everyone becoming the best they can be individually so we can be the best team collectively. A greater number of seniors definitely adds more experience to our squad, but everyone brings their own individual qualities that make us who we are as a team.
GS: What's the best piece advice the coaching staff has given you during your Gopher career?
ME: The best piece of advice I have received is to use my strengths. I learned I don't have to be anybody but myself, that I am unique and have my own skills that I bring to the table. I can use this advice far beyond my volleyball career and am so grateful to be appreciated for my own individual talents.
