Canada Tops U.S. in U22 Series Opener

CALGARY, Alberta - Canada's National Women's Development Team skated to a 2-1 win over the U.S. Women's Under-22 Select Team as the U.S. and Canada kicked off their annual Under-22 three-game series at Canada Olympic Park Wednesday night.

Eight Gophers took the ice for their respective countries, and Cara Piazza was the lone Gopher to record a point with an assist on the U.S. goal. The U.S. held a slight edge in shots on goal at 24-20 for the game.

After a scoreless first period, Canada took a 2-0 lead into the second intermission off a power play goal at the 8:03 mark and doubled its lead with a goal off a loose puck with 23 seconds remaining in the period. The U.S. came within one at 2:31 of the third period when Piazza set up a goal by Sydney Daniels for the Red, White, and Blue.

Gophers Lindsay Agnew and Sarah Potomak were both in the lineup for Canada with Agnew playing right wing and Potomak at center. Gophers assistant coach Nadine Muzerall is also serving as an assistant for Canada during the series.

For the U.S., Taylor Williamson and Kelly Pannek played on a line together with Williamson at left wing and Pannek at center. Piazza and Alex Woken also teamed up on a line together with Piazza centering Woken at right wing. Patti Marshall and Syndey Baldwin were both in the lineup at defense as well.

The Under-22 series continues with game two at 5 p.m. CT Friday night before wrapping up with game three at 5 p.m. CT Saturday.
