From the outside view the Gophers secondary may look like it needs a complete rehaul after having two players in Briean Boddy-Calhoun and Eric Murray go to the NFL. That is not the case.
Damarius Travis should be participating in an NFL training camp right now as well but instead is back for another season in the Maroon and Gold. He started against TCU in the first game of last season but hurt his hamstring on the final play of the game trying to block a punt. He had 10 tackles in the game.
The Pensacola, Fla. native was granted medical hardship from the NCAA and was given one more season of eligibility to use this year. He has 40 games of experience under his belt and is a team captain this year anchoring a secondary that will rely on some experienced players and some who have not played much in college.
Defensive coordinator Jay Sawvel said Travis was the one defensive player the Gophers couldn't afford to lose last year. In 2014 he was versatile playing safety and nickel. He was disruptive making 61 tackles, including 3.5 for a loss, broke up five passes, recorded two interceptions, forced one fumble and recovered one fumble.
Not only was it tough to replace his presence on defense, he was the best special teams player for Minnesota according to Sawvel. He had to be replaced with three different guys on special teams the rest of the year.
In his career Travis has recorded 107 tackles, broke up 11 passes and has made two interceptions.
