Training never ends for the University of Minnesota men's cross country program, and this week is no different for the Gophers.
To kick off the 2016 campaign, the Maroon & Gold are off to Nevis, Minn., for the team's annual preseason training camp in Northern Minnesota.
Throughout camp, GopherSports.com will have regular reports coming directly from members of the team. Today's report comes from redshirt junior Wayde Hall.
"The morning air was as crisp as a fresh-picked red delicious apple. As 8:30 a.m. rolled around the 18 members of the Gophers cross country team began to gather around the picnic tables for practice awaiting coach Plaz's instructions.
The team was feeling extra tired from the previous day's excruciating training and outdoor activities but went out for a beautiful 60-minute run on the ATV trails north of Emmaville. Many of the runners immediately jumped into the lake to relieve themselves of the humid weather.
Awaiting the runners as they returned was a beautiful lunch prepared by Bunch. Following such an exquisite meal was a competitive game of whiffle ball won by the Grey team led by Charlie Lawrence and his minions. Player of the game was Obsa Ali with Derek Jeter-like skills shutting down the likes of Shane Streich and Owen Hoeft from the Maroon team.
The next part of the day consisted of intense games of Monopoly, Risk, and the start of the infamous individual badminton tournament. The tournament has a rich history of winners including legends Blayne Dulian and Travis Burkstrand.
After an easy afternoon run and another delicious meal prepared by Saint Bunch, the runners gathered around the lake for the start of the Kayak races. The Grey team had to suffer through a championship hangover from the previous victory as the Maroon team won with ease on the shoulders of Nick Rink and his powerful performance. Emotions ran high throughout the day with many competitions but the athletes always remained friends no matter what the result."
